i want to whiten my teeth but i don't if whitening strips are any good or to have it done professionaly: how much is it and are there side effects?

Okay..so im guilty...i love to drink coffee, tea, and dark sodas....
from that..i have stained teeth.
on the MSN homepage...they were mentioning something about teeth whitening...and i read the article and it said that Peroxide is what is used to whiten teeth !
So my question is...
Could I use regular peroxide on my toothbrush or something? Or do I have to dilute it...and if I do...how much?
What are the negative effects of using perioxide....because they did say that it DOES NOT cause tooth enamel decay...so...what could be wrong with it?
What teeth whitening and spot products actually work?
I've broken out in spots and none of the products I own actually work. Also my teeth arent as white as they could be so do you have any teeth whitening products you could recommend? I already use colgate teeth whitening toothpaste and that doesn't work at all.

For some time now, I've really wanted to have teeth whitening done.
In reading some of the posts here and on the net, I have real concerns about the home treatment or treatment at the dentist as from what I understand, these treatments do damage the enamel.
As such, is there any other method I can use to get my teeth white. Perhaps it won't work quite as fast as the other treatments out there, but if I could get the results over a period of a month or even longer, I'd be real happy.
