New acne treatment? Any suggestions?
Ok, so i'm 18 years old and I have moderate acne (reddish cheeks and chin area). I've had acne for almost 5 years now. It used to be under control because I took birth control pills (my derma prescribed it) which helped alot but I stopped now because I was afraid of the long term side effects. I have also used Differen but it didn't work and I was allergic to BenzaClin. I don't want to visit my derma anymore because she pushes me to take Accutane but I heard that it has some harmful effects. So anyway, I just want to use over the counter products. I'm using Dermalogica Clean Start Kit and it is really helpful. I still have acne but whenever I put the breakout gel it seems like my pimples get smaller. I want to try some natural products like witch hazel but afraid because I have very sensitive skin.
So do you have any suggestions about what acne products I should use? And what about makeup? I really have really oily face so it's very hard for me to find the right product. I was using Bare Minerals but my face used to get oily by noon.
So basically do you know of any product that is right for an oily, acne-prone skin.

Yeah I have the same problem with accutane so I’m not going on it, but my best friend had really bad acne for years and went on accutane and has beautiful, completely clear skin now. I would do research on accutane if your dermatologist recommended it, but I also understand your problems with it as I feel the same way.
My derm prescribed Retin-A and an antibiotic and my skin is pretty clear now. The key with any of the acne products is to find a good moisturizer as they all dry the skin out. Once I did that, THEN I noticed a difference from the meds. There is a moisturizer and wash combo I use from Mary-Kay called Velocity, specifically made to moisturize oily, blemish prone skin. I’m sure there are other brands that are similar but I love both the wash and the moisturizer. They have nothing in them to fight acne, it is just to clean and moisturize your face, but they work well with retin-a.
For natural products, I’ve been trying a yogurt mask once a day. So far I’ve noticed some great results, and the zinc in yogurt is good for fighting acne. Also, you would be amazed at how much a difference just staying hydrated and getting enough vitamins makes. Your body’s internal condition is reflected on your skin, so staying healthy in general is just as important.

I did some research and talked to my doctor to find the most common causes of acne.
• Hormones: The number one cause of acne is the production of sex hormones, known as androgen, that begins at puberty. This is why majority of acne sufferers are adolescents and teens. Hormones are responsible for then acne flare-ups during menstruation and pregnancy.
• When the sebaceous gland is stimulated by androgens, it produces extra sebum. In its journey up the follicle toward the surface, the sebum mixes with common skin bacteria and dead skin cells that have been shed from the lining of the follicle. While this process is normal, the presence of extra sebum in the follicle increases the chances of clogging — and acne.
• Stress: can also cause the production of hormones, such as cortisol, which can aggravate acne. Stress brings upon different hormone levels. With hormone changes the body prompts the skins oil glands to enlarge, secreting more oil. Which causes white heads, black heads and pimples.
• Oily or heavy make up: Heavy make-up clogs the pores and oily make-ups add more oil, which only adds to the problem if oily skin already exists. Cosmetics, especially certain moisturizers, foundations and pomades contain lanolin, petrolatum, vegetable oils, butyl stearate, lauryl alcohol and oleic acid.
• Certain medications and steroids: Vitamins are good for your body, But an excess of vitamins B1, B6 and B12 can cause acne flare-ups. These vitamins are good for the skin, but avoid overuse.
• Diets: For some people, a diet that is high in refined carbohydrates and sugars can actually aggravate their acne.
• Over abrasive cleansing: Harsh exfoliators can damage skin and spread infections.
• Picking and squeezing: This can actually send the infection deeper into the skin and can cause scarring.
• Environmental irritants: such as high humidity and pollution. High humidity actually causes swelling of skin. Pollution is of course is a big cause for clogging your pores.
• Genes: Family members who are also acne sufferers. Acne is inherited and severe cases known as cystic acne usually come from heredity.
And..,
What the skin needs is a product that clears pores and kills bacteria, thus preventing hair follicles from clogging and turning into acne. This is what you should be looking for if you want to get rid of those ugly acne.
Before trying any treatment, I suggest you read this informational source that listed the most effective acne treatments available:

P.S. I also know someone who used to suffer from severe acne for 14 YEARS and finally got rid of it completely. She’s sharing her story at her site:

Maybe you could learn from her inspirational story.
Good luck.

I’ve been in that situation and there is really nothing you can do about it. There are things you can do to try to reduce the blemishes and get rid of acne/pimples temporarily but you will always be finding yourself cleaning your face or your body depending on where it’s at.
I mean of course your acne should go away eventually but for some this is the case their whole life.
I’m 29 years old and have been suffering from these little pests since I was a teenager. I tried all sorts of face washes from the local grocery store and what not, but nothing seemed to work. If anything it would just make my skin dry and itchy.
Literally the best acne face wash I’ve ever used has been this stuff called clearpores. It has got rid of the acne to quickest and has been a success ever since I got it. It’s unique cause of it’s herbal supplement you take a long with it that helps your skin from the inside out. I saved money on it at skincleansingsystem.com at the time which was helpful.
You should really look into this stuff and if you can to assure the best results, get the 3 month supply because if it doesn’t work it will still save you butt on the return policy.
Well good luck and best wishes.

I know you don’t want to try accutane, but I suggest that u try Accutane (aka isotretinoin ). I have small to moderate amount of acne. Sometimes it disappears then a lot of them appears for awhile. I tried a lot of over the counter products. So finally my dermatologist prescribed me Antibiotics (pills; 2-3 months) with Topical lotion(you need prescription for this; and it does not cause any serious side effects). For a while it did get my face to be bit better but then, acne appeared again.
You can try asking your dermatologist for antibiotics + topical lotion (use alot of sunblocks it helps alot). And if that really does not work for you, then i really suggest Accutane.
I am currently using Accutane (so far 1month). Unlike many others who had used it, my face did not get worse on the 1st month but got way much better. And my lips are only little bit dry. (remember: its always different for people).
And in my opinion, i would stop using foundations for your face. I used bare minerals and many other types of foundations (liquid + powder). And i do have oily skin as well. But foundations make my skin worse, feels dry but when touching the face it seems oily, more acne formed, ect. And it causes your skin to age faster. (<– in my experience on my skin but I dont know if its the same for you)
P.S. Sorry about my grammatical errors, english is my 2nd language. I hope you were able to understand me.
