How to avoid using your arm muscles in a lat pulldown?

Whenever I do lat pulldowns I find that most of the stress is on my arms and I don't feel it in my back. Could anybody give advice on how to do a lat pull down properly?

Also, what other workouts are good for making the "V" shape back?

  1. remember to keep your grip pretty wide. not super wide but a little outside shoulder width. also when doing the lat pulldown u should lean back at an angle (45 degrees or so). bring ur elbows down in front of u more instead of flared out to the side. another great lat exercise is the bent over barbell row. that will really thicken up your lats. hope this helped.

  2. Are you sure you’re leaning back a bit when you’re doing it? That may be the problem, or you are using too much weight. And for the V shape…dead lifts, barbell rows, pullups, v bar pullups/rows, seated cable rows.
