  1. SO, joining the USMC, eh? I would try using a weight that you can do between six and ten reps for 3 or so sets. A good thing about lat pull downs is the fact that you can relax after every rep, because you’re sitting down. Something I like to do is put the machine of a higher weight, something I can only do two or three reps of. Then, do one rep (make it good), wait a few seconds, do another one, wait a few more seconds, then do another one. I repeat this for however long I feel like (usually until my arms tire out). Because you give yourself a bit of time between each rep, your arms can do more than if you just powered through it. At the end of a workout, I put the weight on something fairly light, and do as many reps as I can before my arms completely give out. Remember this feeling, you will feel it often in boot camp. Very, very often.

Remember, also do rows, as well as pull-ups (palms facing you) neutral pull-ups (palms facing each other) and chin-ups palms facing away from you). I would mix at least one of those three variants into your workouts, as each one preps your muscles for the next one.

I do not know your body weight or your current pull-up ability, so this is the best answer I can give.

  2. Start with a weight that you can do 8-10 times for 3 sets. As you get stronger increase that weight. The best way to increase the amount of pullups you can do is to well…do pullups
