How much sleep does a human need to think properly and memorize?

I have a college Chemistry test Monday and I want to prepare as much as possible on Sunday. How many hours of sleep would allow me to wake up rested enough to study but not too rested as to waste time? I want to say 7 hours but I'm not sure if that is correct. I sleep 10 hours yesterday night on accident and wasted a lot of time I could have studied on Saturday.

  1. If you were asleep for 10 hours then it wasn’t a waste of time. If you slept for a while and then just layed in bed for the rest of the time then you might have wasted time. If you can study for a while and then fall a sleep for a while and then wake up and study for a while and sleep again for a while then your brain will incorporate the info you are studying better than pulling a continuous study session and then sleeping. If you are learning something then you need more sleep than if you are just goofing around all the time. And sleep goes in about 90 minute cycles, so how about going to sleep and setting the alarm for 4.5 hours and getting up and trying to study for a while and then then go back to sleep for 3 hours and then getting up to study again? It seems strange but if you time when you wake up early correctly and went back to sleep then you will feel more rested than if you slept the whole time and woke up in the middle of a cycle.
