How long have you been since your last treatment of cancer?

Yesterday was two years since we had radiation for breast cancer and we went out and celebrated with my wife's parents. Sometimes it hurts to think about what we had to go through to be alive, but we are alive. The pains and scars remain with us for the rest of our lives, but we live and try to find our new "normal".

Energy levels are returning, and we visit our oncologist once every six months. How has it been for you?

  1. Apart from taking Tamoxifen for another 4 years at least I finished treatment a year ago. My energy levels were improving dramatically until I had my breast reconstruction a month ago. This has set me back as I am now getting over a 9 hour operation but once I am over that I hope to go full stream ahead to get back my energy.

Before my reconstruction there were times when I could almost forget that I had cancer and I am hoping that with a more ‘normal’ look and feel I will be able to move on and put it all behind me. Cancer will always be a part of my life as I am very interested in it these days and like to help others who are scared to feel better about the whole process but I am not going to let it steal any more of my life by scaring me. If I have a recurrence I will worry about it then but until then I am cancer free and going to enjoy my life.

I am still having three monthly check ups alternating between my oncologist and my breast surgeon with annual mammograms and ultrasounds. The second anniversary of my diagnosis will be in September. My final surgical procedure for my recon will be around the same time so I’m hoping that the year of 2012 will be a new beginning for me.

  2. Eight years, well past my sell by date – YEAH!!

  3. Last March was my Partial Mastectomy, Finished Radiation in June. It’s been almost a year. I go for 6 month mammograms, and have one coming up in June, along with a Ultrasound. Oncologist appointment a few weeks after that.

  4. My son is a cancer patient and it has been two years. we visit our oncologist ever month with a blood report, yes the experience cannot be described, what we have gone through, yes we have learnt to live with hopes and trust in god.

Our christmas in 2009 was in a hospital and the worst part was doctors had no hopes (25th december) that he will live, i was not a good christian then, but i knelt down in the evening and prayed like i have never prayed in my life. my sons immune count was 200 until then, the next day when they did a blood test, his report on the immune count was 8000, our doctor went and brought cake and distributed to the staff.
    MIRACLES

  5. More than 6 years since chemo & radiation, although I did take firstly Tamoxifen then Arimidex for a further 5 years.
