How long do I have to wait after taking birth control to have unprotected sex?

I am 16 and have been dating my boyfriend for 3 years and just started being sexually active with him a few months back and I just started taking birth control today, it is the third day of my period. How long do I have to wait before I can have unprotected sex?

  1. The pill is not 100% effective and it is unwise to have unprotected sex with anyone you can not guarantee does not have a STI. You should use both contraceptives.

Also I have no idea what form of the pill you are taking but most require that you take a sugar pill throughout your period. You should take your regular pill after your period ends and a week after that there will be enough chemicals in your body to work as a contraceptive.

  2. you should NEVER have unprotected sex. birth control pills aren’t 100%. your doctor should have told you that. you have to wait 1 week on active pills before having sex. it takes a week for your body to respond to it.

  3. If you started birth control on the first day or your period, you are protected immediately. If not, you have to wait 7 days.
