You can have herpes for a long time before a having a break out and you can go for months in between having break outs.
Keep your immune system healthy and try not to get run down by stress. Keep an eye out, if you do get a break out avoid having oral sex and intercourse until it’s completely gone. You can take the medication if you want to, it can help reduce your chances of passing herpes while you don’t have signs or symptoms of a break out.
By the way kudos for telling your partner.

Herpes once contracted is a lifelong infection. Herpes doesnt really have a set break out schedule. Usually the first breakout is the worst and then after the immune system controls it it goes into latency.
If you do have a break out there are medicines that can reduce the duration of the breakout but they will not be able to clear the virus.
Overall I wouldnt worry.
