How do you tell the difference between bleeding from a broken hymen and your period?

I lost my virginity on Thursday (we used protection) and it's now Sunday. I had very little bleeding at first, but the next day, I had heavy bleeding with horrible cramps, and the same the next day. Now it's starting to subside though, so what I'm wondering is, how can you tell if the bleeding is from breaking your hymen, or from your period? I need to know because I need to start birth control pills, and if this isn't my period, then I need to know when it is so that I can start them.

  1. Well, the blood from breaking your hymen should be really fresh and bright-red looking, whereas the blood from your period is usually dark and sort of thick because it’s mixed with mucus. Also, bleeding from your hymen really shouldn’t last long – probably not more than a couple of hours, and if it broke you’ll be a bit sore down there. It sounds to me like it’s probably your period.

  2. hymen is just a little blood, not as heavy or long lasting as your period. so id say that would be your period :P

  3. well, in MY experience of busting my hyemen, i only had a little blott of blood on my underware (i racked myself on my mountain bike, ouch!) and that was it. no cramps and certainly no bleeding the next day. it sounds to me like you got your period. Consult a local planned parenthood, or the prescribing doctor who gave you the pills as to when its safe to start your pills! Good luck!
