How do they test you for a mental disorder?
Well I've been pretty messed up for 5ish years and I think its probably a mental disorder. I was reading about bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and a few others and all their symptoms seem like what I have going on. I'm thinking of going to the doctors but I want to know how they check you for it. Do they just ask you questions or is there some kind of test or something else?

They show you abstract images and ask you what they are. If you say butterflies and bunnies you’re gonna be fine. mention blood or grim reaper and you’re gonna have a nice white outfit and puffy room.
OK, on a more serious note, i think they might ask you questions and make you do a test.

they ask you questions, and you answer them. and then put the apparent symptoms together.

They just ask questions, there’s no specific test its not like you’re put in a scanner or anything they just see how you think and what you do to see if you really have mental problems

They ask you questions, like when everything started happening and what kind of triggers you were facing. Also they’ll assess your risk level. There’s no blood diagnostic test for mental disorders. They’ll also ask you about your family history and relationships with them. They’ll ask you about your medical history, and the different things that have been going on in your life. They’ll also ask you about your mood and how it fluctuates. The doctor will also ask about any trauma in your life, including abuse and suicide attempts. It is definitely important to let them know about anything going even if they don’t ask you about it. They’ll also ask you about your sleeping habits and patterns.
It’s basically a really in depth interview, but the good thing is that its generally confidential. You don’t have to worry about anyone else finding out, unless you’re a minor, then your parents will have a chat with the doctor.

There is an internationally agreed book which sets out the signs and symtoms of all known mental health conditions, they ask you a lot of questions about your problems and see which category you fit into. Its called the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" or DSM.

Hi,
Bipolar Disorder is diagnosed by the symptoms you describe in an interview. There is no blood test if that’s what you’re referring to. Medications are extremely helpful in evening out mood swings, and therapy is extremely useful in helping you adopt a lifestyle and patterns of thinking to improve your mood. See a psychiatrist for the meds, see a therapist (psychologist, social worker, etc) for the therapy. Good luck!

Qustions and observation of your behavior and moods…. probably do a physical with standard bloodwork to rule out anything physical (like a thyroid issue)….
