How can I get relief from my headache without medication?

I have a horrible headache right now, it started over an hour ago. The only pain relievers in my house are ibuprofen or aspirin, however, due to an upcoming surgery, I am not allowed to have either of them.

How can I make my headache stop, or at least make it less painful, without the use of medication?

  1. Cold compress over the eyes and/or forehead can help. If you don’t have any sort of eye mask that can go in the freezer, wet a washcloth with very cold water, ring it out and fold it up over your eyes.

There’s a pressure point between your thumb and index finger. You hold your hand flat with your thumb out. With your thumb and index finger of the other hand, pinch just below where the connecting skin is – the part that looks almost webbed.

Sometimes if I just push down on my head – or on the sides if that’s where your headache is – with the palms of my hands – basically squeezing your head, that seems to help. Only problem is that when you stop squeezing, the pain comes back.

Sit in a dark quiet room.

Instead of lying down, sit up. That seems to relieve the pain a bit.

Can you take anything at all? Can you take Tylenol? Or are all drugs off limits right now?

EDIT – I know this is too late now, but I remembered a couple of other things I’ve read that can be good just for future reference.

If your headache is a migraine and on one side of your head, you put the elbow of the opposite arm in a bowl of ice or iced water. I don’t remember how long, but not long enough so that you hurt your arm. (Headache on left side, ice right elbow for example.)

And while caffeine may be a headache trigger for some, it can also help get rid of a headache. A cup (cup as in mug not a 20 oz cup) of coffee has been known to work for some people.

  2. cover your eyes with something

  3. Deyhydration is usually why people get a headache. Or it could be your eyes depending on where it is. You could try drinking a couple cups of water and laying down for 20-30 minutes with your eyes closed. Also make sure you’ve had enough to eat today.

  4. Try feverfew and peppermint…they both work for headaches. If you have a peppermint tea, drink that and see if it works….if not, get the peppermint oil and take about 5-10 drops(or as recommended on label)…I grow peppermint and chew on fresh leaves when I get a migrane and that usually stops it…..

  5. Ice, cubed or crushed, in a freezer bag wrapped in a towel. Place it at the back of the neck from the base of the skull to the top of the shoulders. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes, then take it off for about 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat as needed. You can either lie down or sit in a chair, preferably in a darkened, quiet room.
