Cancer – How to pay the medical bills when your insurance is gone?
Cancer - How to pay the medical bills when your insurance is gone?
My mum is diagnosed with cancer and won't be able to work soon. Her insurance will last for three months after she stops working. How is it possible for my family to pay for the medical bills without any insurance? Anyone who has/had this situation, I'd appreciate it if you can share your experiences and advise on what can be done.
Thank you very much.

I have aids and run into $ issues all the time. First of all file for disability-ssi it is a long process but worth it once it is approved. Try to go to your local DHHR office and apply for state benefits. They work off of income and or diagnosis to qualify. Search hard for other outlets. Community projects, church groups, there all kinds of help its just hard to find them sometimes. You may find a lot of info at the Health Department and they may be able to help. If i knew where you were i and knew the area i could help but i don’t. You have the internet so keep looking. Try the phone book as well. There are a lot of women only clinics. My wife and I will pray for you and your family to find help. Maybe try that as well. It can’t hurt. GOOD LUCK. I truly am sorry for what you are going through. This sucks too but stiff the bills you can. Life is more important than $. Credit scores can be rebuilt not you mother.

my friend had cancer with no insurance and her family is millions of dollars in debt. you could put it on a credit card and then just be screwed. i’m not trying to be mean, just realistic. or you could have a ton of fundraisers. but a credit card would work and just throw away the bills. or sue.

Check out COBRA, I think that extends insurance for 6 months after employment insurance ends. Some people manage to work through cancer treatment – it depends on the type of cancer and the treatment. There may be a social worker at the hospital where your mother is treated who might have some advice.

Your family needs to maintain health insurance coverage. If your mother’s current health insurance is through an employer and she is losing her job, then the COBRA program allows continued insurance by paying for it herself.
If she does not have employer provided insurance, then she needs to look into your state’s "high risk pool" health insurance designed for people with serious pre-existing conditions. Contact your state’s Department of Health for details. The U.S. federal government will launch a national "high risk pool" sometime in June. It is part of Obama’s health care law.
Based on income eligibility criteria, your mother may qualify for Medicaid or another government program, but that is a last resort.
Contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 to discuss your situation and learn more about possible options. COBRA sounds like her best bet.

I am so sorry for you and so grateful that we don’t have such a desperate issue here in the UK.
I hope you can find a way to fund your Mum’s continuing treatment and that she responds.
