Why do I have ugly skin and acne, but my sister doesnt?

I am 16 and had acne, breakouts, blackheads etc since I was 12. I am 16 now and it has made me SO self concious. Right now I have 3 pimples on my forehead, blackheads all over nose, and my chin and mouth area is all broke out :( they are red, flat noticeable pimples.

I use a face cleanser twice a day, and a moisturizer. I don't really wear makeup, sometimes Concealer but it doesn't cover well. I exfoliate a few times a week, and use a clay mask once a week.

My sister is almost 14 and has 98% clear skin. She rarely washes her face! She doesn't at night and only sometimes in the morning with just water. She doesn't use any products.

It makes me mad !

  1. I can totally feel your pain. I have an older brother, who, when he was in high school, never had a breakout and to this day has completely clear skin. I still get the occasional breakout (at age 20 now) and have acne scars all over.

Your regimen sounds good, although I hope you are using a water-based moisturizer. I use either an Estee Lauder (Hydrationist) or Lancome (Bienfait Aqua Vital Cream). You can also try the new Garnier Refreshing Gel Cream. If you’re using a mineral concealer, that may exacerbate your acne, even though it can be touted as "healthy" for your skin. Also, I’d limit the exfoliating to once a week – I used to use a microdermabrasion cream but have now completely stopped as it had actually been making things worse. I personally use a cucumber mask (once again, the more water, the better!) 3 times a week. I’m not sure what facial cleanser you use, but the ones for acne were too harsh. I prefer Biore’s "Clean Things Up Nourishing Gel Cleanser" in the mornings and Olay facial cloths (normal skin or oily skin) in the evenings. Always be sure to remove any traces of makeup – I always regret falling asleep with my foundation on! And use a spot treatment – Clean & Clear’s Advantage Acne Spot Treatment is good without over-drying your skin.

Keep in mind that EVERYONE’S skin is different. I tried a prescription antibiotic (minocycline and clindamycin) and both wreaked havoc on my body so I stopped. They did work and when I took amoxicillin (after my wisdom teeth), that inadvertently cleared up my skin as well. If you are really tired of dealing with acne, keep up your regimen and go see a dermatologist.

Edit – I answered this yesterday but had another point to bring up. It may sound counter-intuitive, but foundation may actually help. I had to go through a couple brands before I found one I really like. I’m assuming you don’t use sunscreen and that can make matters worse – for any type of skin. Plus, I find that on days I don’t wear foundation, my skin produces a lot more oil and it’s more prone to breakouts. When applied on a clean face, foundation can be beneficial by preventing too many environmental "things" (for lack of a better word – not sure if they’d be called "toxins") from entering your skin. I personally use Estee Lauder Double Wear Light Stay-in-Place Makeup SPF 10. It holds up great even in humid weather. And while it can be pricey, I use it for about 4-5 months so I think it’s worth it. I also used Neutrogena Healthy Skin for about 3 years before I switched to the Estee Lauder one.

  2. Go to a doctor and get a prescription. I have a friend just like that and I am so jealous! Her skin is really really healthy and she doesn’t even take good care of it.

  3. It depends on the individual…
But don’t worry, it will go away soon, usually at 17-18 in your case. Everybody goes through this, your sister might go though this later this year or 15. The face washes you use might be irritating on your skin type, check the doctor for that. Anyways, good luck!

  4. Yeah, same with my sister. shes never had skin issues… EVER a break out for her is a single pimple like wtf. shes 22 now and i’m 16 wondering WHY DID THE AMAZING GENETICS NOT GET PASSED ONTO ME TOO?!?!?!
