So my cat has acne.. what now?
My cat has had acne on and off since kittenhood.. We bought prescription strength treatment from our vet and it didn't help. We bought benzoyl peroxide wipes from the store - didn't help (you can't find these ANYWHERE anymore). I don't use plastic bowls - only ceramic. I wash their bowls often with hot water and soap. I don't know what else to do. We have a new vet since the last one we got creams from but he's so expensive and nothing else has worked. Any home remedies that won't hurt her? It looks so bad and scabby.. I feel awful.
I don't think Proactive has made a cat version yet... lol

Cat acne comes and goes. Like in a day or two, It’s usually caused by stress, and doesn’t bother the cat AT ALL. Why on earth would you treat it? The cats affected have no idea that they are "afflicted". I’ve had adult cats with "acne" on their chins for about 5 hours (can see foster kittens through the french doors) and then it’s gone the next morning and never seen again. Acne is not a big deal. It’s certainly not like ringworm!
If your vet is milking this for profit, you should find a new vet!

Try hydrogen peroxide? a solution of Epsom salts? Chlorhexadine ?
And you might try switching to stainless steel or glass dishes. My vet said plastic is the worst, ceramic is better but stainless steel or glass are the best.
And wash the kitty’s chin after she eats.
Oh and I heard that fatty acid supplements can help. Can’t hurt anyway.
There IS good reason to treat this, bad cases can be very irritating to a cat who may then scratch at it and cause further trauma to the skin; secondary infection can result. .and need to be treated with antibiotics. and topical A/B may not be enough, sometimes they may need an oral one. But to decide whether an A/B is needed the vet should do a skin scraping and send for culture and sensitivity test.
Did the vet definitely rule out anything else going on like a yeast infection?
