Mom won't buy me skincare products?

I have acne. I often get big red pimples. Right now, I probably have 10-12 small pimples spread throughout my face. I had to practically beg her to buy me a cleanser. When I ask her if I could buy an acne spot treatment or a light moisturizer or toner, she says I just have to wash my face. I do, but it doesn't matter. She says don't touch your face. I don't want expensive products and my acne isn't that bad. I think if I put some care into it, I could have flawless skin. And I do have the money to buy these things myself because of baby-sitting but my mom would have to be the one to take me to the store. I do have an older sister, but she suffers more than me and has prescription creams. How can I convince my mom? and what is a skincare routine I should follow. Thanks!!
Sorry, I am 14.

  1. Noxema is a great brand. So is Oxy (I think that’s what its called). I never had major acne when I was younger either, but was more like you. My mom and I went through several products before finding what worked right for me. Here’s what I like to use:

In the morning I use a face scrub/wash with moisturizing beads. I put on some light facial lotion that has SPF prtotection (like Olay day face moisturizer). Then I put on my make-up (mineral foundation–which btw I would look into if I were you. They really make my skin look so much better. And now that more major/cheaper cosmetics are carrying them they are a lot more convenient and inexpensive)

At night, I use cleansing pads that exfoliate. I like to use them right before my shower, because then the shower steam opens up the pores and makes your skin feel great. After the shower I put on some more face lotion. You can use the same one you used for daytime like I do, or if you have dry skin you can use a thick cream one especially formulated for night time wear.

Most of these products are pretty inexpensive and worth it. Just make sure that if your skin starts to feel dry, try and find a product with more moisture in it (or use the pads or harsh exfoliators less). On the flip side, try to use oil-free products or products that say they won’t clog your pores because other products can cause you to break out (I had a hard time finding face lotion that wasn’t too oily for me).

Tell your mom rationally why you think you should use these products. She may be interested in the SPF face lotions that will protect your face from the elements and harmful UV rays which can cause cancer. Also, tell her that you are just interested in trying these products to see if they help you a little bit. Perhaps you can make a point that you don’t feel it’s fair that your sister can get medicated, expensive face products, but you can’t use normal products to help keep your skin looking it’s best (just try not to sound too whiny or childish because that may backfire on you)

Hope this helped–Sorry it was so long

  2. you can use toothpaste

  3. Take some money with you the next time you go into town to shop with her and buy your own. Will your sister let you borrow some of hers?

  4. that’s kinda gross, but save up lots of money and get the best stuff you can find. then you will be sexy !

    :]

  5. Mary Kay has a really good cleanser and moisturizer for teens. It’s called Velocity. My two girls use it and it seems to keep their pimples at bay. It costs about $20 dollars for the cleanser and the moisturizer but it lasts a long time. See if you have a Mary Kay consultant in your area. She may even be able to give you a free sample too.

  6. Just buy the stuff with your money when you go to the store with her. I assume you go with her then as you see it going down buy more don’t wait until you are empty

  7. honestly you will probably follow in your sister foot steps sounds like it runs in the family, try to save up enough money and invest in pro active and then give your mom the money and ask her to buy it for you( you can only get it either by phone or computer) explain to her how important this is to you and it would make you feel better about yourself and not ashamed of how your face looks. also try not to put make up on (eye shadow, eye liner, ect are okay but nothing to try and hide the pimples it will just make them worse!) GOOD LUCK

  8. I would get Neutrogena, Clean & Clear, cleanser, toner and lotion. All 2x a day! Spot treatment if necessary I suggest using at night, bc can cake up under make up! I find it odd she wont allow you to increase your self esteem. Maybe go w a friend or friends parent, aunt or family member, maybe evn your dad! If you dont have alot of money right away I suggest Cleanser and toner and exfoliater (scrub)

Cleanser_ Clean & Clear -Deep Action cleanser
Scrub _ St Ives- Apricot Scrub

  9. How old are you? I had this problem with my mom when I was younger. The fact that your sister has more severe acne could be a sign that you might get bad as well; however you might not. If I were you I would ask my mom what she felt I should use to wash my face and then do what she suggest and make sure she knows that you are doing exactly what she has suggested you to do. Give it about 3 weeks and if it doesn’t show improvement than have a talk with her. Say "Mom, I’ve tried what you suggested and it hasn’t worked, having acne makes me feel bad about myself and I want to know if I can see a dermatologist."
It’s better that you see the dermatologist first because they can treat you with mild medications that will be better than the over the counter things. Or suggest some over the counter things that you could use if you have really mild acne. Good luck.

  10. If you have the money I don’t GET your mother! At first I was thinking about how hard it was with my older kids for me to afford all the things they really needed but this isn’t about Money!

I have no idea what you mother’s problem is….???? It is your money–your face and if you take steps to care for your skin you might not need perscriptions later…. Goodness!

I wonder it there is some way you can order on Avon…. They have some nice products my older daughter very much liked and they don’t cost that much…. Sometimes if you look on AVON.com to see if there might be a Local Representative maybe she could help get some products to you….

The only other idea I have is Online ordering–but, that requires a credit card…

What about asking a friend to get it for you–or perhaps talk with your school counselor or a teacher you trust….

If you want to face your mother Maybe start by sitting down when things are fine and say,

"Mother we need to talk…. I am confused and don’t understand what your objection is to my purchasing Zit-Cream with my babysitting money?"

Maybe she actually has some ligitamate answer? Maybe she thinks the over the counter stuff is Crap or will only make things worse? Maybe you are allergic? Did she allow your sister to use the over the counter stuff? Maybe your mom still thinks you are her "little one"????

Wash your face—do not pick and pop….
    Keep your hair clean…

The only thing I know is that I was a Swimmer and spent time in the pool and sun and never had pimples so… When you can get a "Little" sun too it is good for your skin but not too much.

  11. having pimples in that age is natural. it’s the time when your body makes adjustments and sometimes it leads you to break out. you should wash your face at least twice a day. to get rid of dirt. use a mild soap or cleanser to do it.

  12. some one suggested maryk don’t listen to them mary k is really expensive! i would save up my money and buy something of your choice at the drug store. everyone has different skin types so to give you a specific brand may not be a good idea because it might make your skin worse. you know the type of skin you have so go by your skin type and what you see at the store. proactive is really good and you can buy it at some malls i don’t know where you live but where i live they have vendors that sell it at the mall. you can even ask your doctor for the same prescription that your sister uses because skin disorders like that can be genetic

  13. Make sure your drinking enough water & not too much crappy food. If you wear makeup make sure your washing it off properly. If you have multivitamins etc in the house make sure your having those in the morning or whatever.
You only need a plain (not scented) face wash and just try the dabs of toothpaste on the spots at night.
