Is there anything that I could do to prevent acne?

My mom won't pay for any medication or scrubs such as proactive. However, I have really bad acne. Is there like a home remedy that I could make to get rid of my horrible acne?

  1. Zinc Supplementation
Taking 50mg of zinc a day has really helped my acne and the scarring. This is the only form of over-the-counter "treatment" in which results can be seen overnight. If my acne is particularly bad, I’ll take 50mg of zinc before my last meal or snack before bed and by the next morning my skin is much clearer.

It’s very important to take the zinc before or during a meal and taking no more than 50mg as it can cause nausea. If you do experience nausea, sip some ginger ale, or eat anything with ginger in it, soda crackers, or dry toast.

    * I have experience no dizziness with zinc, at all. It is purely subjective. Just because one person experiences a side effect, does not mean everyone will. Try a smaller dose if you’re worried about dizziness.

Before beginning this form of treatment I strongly recommend you read through this article. These are the positives and negatives of taking zinc supplements.

    Salt Scrub
Mix salt with your favourite moisturizer. Apply mixture to face and gently massage over acne-prone areas.

    Apple Cider Vinegar
Rather than dabbing the juice of a lemon onto your pimples, try some apple cider vinegar. I’d recommend leaving it on overnight and rinsing it off with cool water in the morning. I find many treatments are more effective this way.
    Lemon Juice

Another way to fight a blemish is with lemons. Start by washing your face. Squeeze the juice of a lemon (or use lemon juice from the bottle) into a container and apply the juice to your blemishes. You can use this as a spot treatment or cover your entire face. Leave on for 5-60 minutes, or overnight if you’d like. It may sting a little! Gently wash the juice from your face with cool water. You can also do a quick rinse in the shower.

    Suck on a Lemon
I’ve found after consuming freshly squeezed lemon juice, my skin tends to look a whole lot better within a few hours. Try sucking on a lemon and see if it does anything for you!

    Orange Juice
Squeeze the juice of a fresh orange into a cottonball or container. Apply as a spot treatment or to the entire face. Rinse with cool water.

    Lemon/Honey Mask
Combine 2 tbsps of honey and 2 tbsps of lemon juice (you can use freshly squeezed lemon juice, or the kind that comes bottled). Mix together and apply as a spot treatment or to the entire face. Let sit for 5-60 minutes and rinse with cool water. You can also do a quick mask in the shower.

    Tea Tree Oil
Tea Tree Oil is another product that is supposed to be good for acne. This is one product that didn’t seem to help my acne and the smell of the oil was awful. For acne scarring the product was okay, but I prefer Bio Oil. It’s probably best to use the oil as a spot treatment and leave overnight.

    Toothpaste
Sensodyne toothpaste is great for drying out pimples that have heads. I like to apply it before bed and leave it on overnight, I get the best results this way.

    Potato Treatment
Slice a raw potato in half and rub on affected areas. The vitamins within the juice of the potato are great for the skin! They will reduce redness and improve the complexion of the skin.

    Vegetable Blend
Blend together: 1 tomato, half a cucumber, half a carrot and a few mint leaves. Apply the juice to entire face for 5-60 minutes and rinse with cool water. Avoid rinsing with warm water to prevent buildup within your pores.

    Cinnamon Powder
Combine cinnamon powder and water in a bottle. Shake and apply to acne as a spot treatment. Leave for 5-60 minutes and rinse with cool water.

    Papaya
Mash a papaya and apply juice to face. This can be applied as a spot treatment or to the entire face. Leave on for 5-30 minutes and rinse with warm water.

  2. To the person who recommended the zinc, I would strongly urge you not to take it. I took the exact dose she talks about, and I ended up getting chronic dizziness that lasted for one year! People even thought I had multiple sclerosis, after I read something online that connected zinc to it. I didn’t end up having it, but I definitely had dizziness for about a year. Don’t take the zinc.

Also some people have insulin resistance, which basically means that your cells do not respond to insulin the way normal cells do, and you end up with excess blood sugar in your blood, and it ends up on your face. You can read more about it. But acne is definitely connected to diet with some people. Insulin resistance is a real thing. So I would suggest, avoid all sugary things! If you have cravings, eat fruits, bananas, raspberries, whatever you like, as long as you don’t eat a lot of them. On top of that, drink lots of water and moisturize. Good luck!
