Is there a way to get over social anxiety?

My social anxiety stems from my teenage years when I had stage 5 acne(affecting roughly 1 in 10,000 during their adolencense) nodular cystic acne over 80% of my face. I'm clear now, but I have never got rid of the anxiety I feel around people.

I'm in a band, and while I've played many shows, I still get so nervous I almost puke when I go out in play. The only thing I have found that helps is having some alcohol before the show, but not enough to affect my coordination.

Any medications or anything availiable for this?
That was in my teenage years I had acne, it was because of a liver disfunction, it was beyond severe acne, not even accutane would work, I am one of, if not the only one, alive to have experienced the sererity of acne for the length of time I did. This is a few years down the road.
For having a unrecognizable face for three years and meth addicted abusive parents I'd say just me being here today say something about my problem solving methods.

I don't know of anyone who has had to battle through the problems I've had to battle through.

  1. Yes, there are medications and many different types of therapy. I’m sorry for what you went through. I can only imagine what it must have been like with the lack of social grace and kindness of most adolescents. That you make it on stage at all is quite remarkable with the level of anxiety you are experiencing. And the meds available are far better at reducing anxiety than alcohol so maybe you can give that up. Start with your family doc or a psychiatrist or even a therapist (many people overcome this without any meds at all.) Best of luck.

  2. See a counselor. You need to work through this before alcohol takes over. Good luck

  3. I take Xanax.

  4. Playing in front of people is nerve raking. Maybe you should just be nervous and live with it. The nervous energy you put off on stage can sometimes be a good thing, puking on stage would be awsome, at least for me to see!

    Otherwise:

Xanax works wonders. I’ve know others to take buspar. Speak with a doctor, they’re always happy to help with this common condition.

  5. I think what you need to do is concentrate on clearing up your face, which will help your self-esteem which wil in turn help your social anxiety.

Relying on alcohol to get you more social is not only unwise, but can eventually lead to alcohol abuse. I suggest you look into clearing up your skin with topical medication, natural suppliments, keeping your skin clean, eating properly, staying away from sodas and other sugary drinks. You may also want to visit a dermatologist and see what new things are available. I would not, however, use antibiotics or other strong medications. Those cause other problems in the long run. Good luck.
