Birth control options? Problems??? 10 points!!!!?

Hello everyone,

I went on Sprintec (generic of Ortho Cyclen) March of 2009. My first period on it was horrendous but then it was fine until July. I had spotting like crazy, constant nausea, headaches, and my breasts were lactating.

I went to my primary care dr about everything. After blood tests, it was found that my prolactin (what makes pregnant women lactate) was abnormally high. I stopped taking the pill and the prolactin levels went down in the normal range but are still a little high.

Since stopping the pill i have had irregular periods (not a problem prior to BC), severe cramping, horrible acne that won't clear up, and have been extremely moody during PMS. HORRIBLE! I have been off the pill for 5 cycles but it feels like time only makes things worse.

I saw a gyno that specializes in hormone therapy stuff. She said I should try the Nuva Ring. She gave me a free sample and said I'd love it. Due to my last experience on birth control I am a little hesitant to start this. Does anyone know about the Nuva Ring or any other options that have worked for you as birth control and to help PMS symptoms?

Thank you!

  1. you’re going to a specialist because you trust they know what they’re talking about, right? i mean why else go?? so if she gave you something she feels would be better, you should trust her opinion.

  2. I had loads of trouble with most contraceptives until i discovered the EVRA patch, its like a stop smoking patch you stick it somewhere on your body and change it every week like the pill and take a week break, i have had no problems with this
    i hope this helps you

  3. I’m not any help to you about Nuva Ring but I’m on Yaz and it’s worked wonders for me. I have heavy bleeding and horrible cramps that would last up to 7 days, and super moody. Yaz has shortened my period to about 4 days max, light to normal bleeding. Cramps have went from an 8 to a 4 and I have zero ache and my mood is much better. I recommend it :)

  4. WOW. I had the same type of symptom on Ortho Cyclen,
they told me to get a Nuva ring,
I decided not to and i got a lower dose of birth control Ortho Tri Cyclen,
that didn’t make a difference so I went to Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo
    that didnt work either.
I Found out my body already has enough estrogen and my body does well with non-estrogen pills, Progesterone only pills.
    Now I take Ortho micro-nor.
Works great and I have no side effects like I was getting on estrogen pills.
    hope this helps you
